Eligibility Requirements:
- Candidates must be 18 years of age or above and under 39 years of age on the 14th of April 2025.

Educational Requirements:
School Leaver or Non-Graduate Candidates
- Must possess a minimum of Grade H5 in 3 Higher Level papers and Grade O4 in 3 Ordinary Level papers or Grade H7 in 3 Higher Level papers.
- These grades must have been obtained in a single sitting of the Leaving Certificate examination for CAO computation purposes.
- A candidate’s educational qualifications must include a minimum of:
- Mathematics: Grade O6 at Ordinary Level or H6 at Higher Level
- Irish: Grade O6 at Ordinary Level or H6 at Higher Level (NUI matriculation exemptions apply)
- English: Grade O6 at Ordinary Level or H6 at Higher Level (Candidates whose first language is not English must satisfy NUI English language requirements)
Terms and Conditions (2025):
- If a candidate has achieved Grade H4 in 4 Higher Level papers and Grade O2 in 2 Ordinary Level papers or Grade H7 in 2 Higher Level papers, they may use the results of another Leaving Certificate sitting to meet the Mathematics, Irish, and English requirements.
- Nautical Science Applicants:
- School Leaver applicants undertaking a Level 7 (or below) NFQ qualification in Nautical Science may be facilitated in continuing their training in a college nominated by the Flag Officer Commanding Naval Service.
- Applicants with a Level 8 (or below) NFQ qualification in a field not specified above may seek equivalency determination by submitting evidence to:
- Defence Forces Recruitment Section, Defence Forces Headquarters, Department of Defence, Station Road, Newbridge, Co. Kildare, W12 AD93.
Graduate Candidates
- Must have successfully completed a Bachelor’s Degree (Level 8 NFQ) from a recognised institution.
- OR
- Must have successfully completed a Bachelor’s Degree (Level 7 NFQ) in Nautical Science from a recognised institution.
