About the Naval Service:
The Naval Service is based in Haulbowline, Cobh, Co. Cork and is the State's principal seagoing agency with a general responsibility to meet contingent and actual maritime defence requirements. It is a multi-tasked organisation operating a fleet of ships which are at the leading edge of marine technology with state-of-the-art machinery, weapons, communications, and navigation systems.
The Defence Forces presents endless opportunities for you to develop, as a person and as a leader. Learn how to be part of a team, how to be a leader, and how to manage people. Work and experience life in a unique environment with the strength of a diverse team around you.
We are now accepting applications for General Service Recruits. The Naval Service is looking to recruit you to be part of our team that patrols and protects our territorial waters. If you enjoy being part of a team and want a career with a difference apply now.
Becoming a Naval Service Recruit:
· Naval Service Recruits go on to form the backbone of the Irish Naval Service.
· Recruit training is 12 weeks in duration and is designed to develop a physically fit, disciplined and motivated person using basic military and naval skills in order to prepare them for further training in the Service. They then advance to Ordinary Rate and complete their Professional Branch training. On successful completion of both Recruit and Professional training the new inductees are promoted to Able Rate and posted to a Naval Service ship where they continue to develop their skills.
· The Naval Service has four Branches consisting of Seaman's, Communications, Mechanicians and Supplies.
· The Ordinary Rate commences their chosen Branch training giving them the specialised skills required to fulfil their role at sea and ashore. After this initial specialisation training, they will proceed to sea and take up an appointment onboard one of our ships for a two-year rotation.
· Life at sea is at all times varied. The newly qualified Able Rate regardless of Branch is a much-valued member of the ship’s crew. As well as Branch duties, you will be called on to complete other duties such as general maintenance, boat work, Damage Control and Firefighting.
· You may also be a member of a Naval Boarding team during Drug Interdiction Operations.
· Newly qualified Able Rates are encouraged to put themselves forward for further courses in the Naval Service. These courses may enable the Seaman to specialise in certain areas of the Naval Service and progress towards career advancement. If you are interested in a life at sea, as part of a dynamic, professional and highly motivated team, then the Naval Service is for you.
Essential Requirements:
· No formal education qualifications are required to join the Defence Forces as a recruit.
· Applicants must be 18 years of age and under 39 years of age on the date deemed as the closing date for applications.
· Candidates undergo fitness testing, an interview, Garda Vetting and a medical exam. The Induction Process will determine if you have the potential to become member of the Naval Service.
Pay and Allowances:
A competitive basic salary of €41,435 with yearly increments. Naval Service personnel receive an additional approx. €20,570 per annum. Additional allowances for overseas service are not included. This allowance starts at €15,000 per annum in addition to your salary and is tax free.
