Current Need:
The Operations department are looking for a Technical Services and Sustainability Manager to lead and oversee the Technical Services team at the Swords campus. This pivotal role ensures the department complies with all regulatory requirements (e.g., EPA, HSA) while achieving organizational goals and objectives.
Reporting to the Operations Associate Director, the successful candidate will have overall responsibility for managing critical operations, including the Thermal Oxidizer, Cryogenic Abatement Plant, Fresh Solvent & Waste Tank Farm, Wastewater Treatment Plant, Surface Water and Drainage Systems, Waste Management and Fire Systems and driving the site sustainability deliverables.
This role requires a proactive approach to compliance with GMP and SHE standards, continuous improvement initiatives, and effective leadership.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Tactical & Strategic Management:
• Oversee both the day-to-day tactical execution and the long-term strategic planning for Technical Services, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
2. Policy and Compliance:
• Working in conjunction with the SHE department, develop, implement, and maintain policies and procedures that align with best practices and regulatory standards (e.g., SHE, GMP).
• Ensure compliance with Environmental licenses, cGMP guidelines, and maintain an in-depth focus on Environmental Compliance (e.g. IED Licence).
• Manage environmental compliance and ensure the site meets critical operational and regulatory obligations to maintain licenses to operate.
3. Sustainability Leadership:
• Develop and implement strategies to reduce the site's environmental footprint, focusing on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction, Water, Waste Management, and Air Emissions.
• Provide Energy leadership to site and active participation in the Corporate Energy Team and deliver initiatives to meet Corporate ESG and sustainability targets.
• Lead the site’s sustainability initiatives, including meeting key commitments to programs like SBTI, CDP, and Eco-vadis.
4. Environmental Programs Management:
• Water Management Programme: Lead and manage compliance with regulations around wastewater, surface water, potable water, and Legionella control, ensuring all systems are operational and meet compliance obligations.
• Air Emissions Programme: Oversee compliance with the IED Licence for air emissions, ensuring abatement equipment (e.g., Thermal Oxidizer, Cryo Plant, Carbon Beds, Scrubbers) is maintained and operational to meet regulatory standards.
• GHG Reduction Programme: Lead GHG reduction initiatives related to fuels, refrigerants, and other substances, and ensure monthly energy consumption data is provided for emissions calculations.
5. Waste Management:
• Manage all aspects of bulk liquid & solid wastes (solvents, chemicals, sludge), ensuring compliance with E.P.A. and regulatory requirements.
• Develop continuous improvement plans for waste management, focusing on efficiency and sustainability.
6. Safety and Infrastructure Management:
• Safety Management: Management of all aspects of works involving contractors and colleagues, ensuring adherence to site standards and regulatory requirements. Lead safety meetings and ensure that execution in the field aligns with set expectations.
• Infrastructure Management: Responsible for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of underground and overground infrastructure (e.g., pipelines, tanks, bunds), ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and risk management protocols.
7. Operational Management:
• Manage solvent requirements, deliveries, and regulatory audits (e.g., EPA, HSA).
• Enhance plant and process performance using continuous improvement tools and technologies, ensuring operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.
8. Leadership and Team Development:
• Provide leadership and direction to the Technical Services team, promoting a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Offer coaching, feedback, and developmental opportunities to team members, ensuring alignment with company goals and enhancing the department’s overall capabilities.
9. Financial Management:
• Prepare and monitor the annual operating budget for Technical Services, ensuring control of costs and adherence to financial targets.
• Capital project support is a key part of the role (in terms of asset life-cycle mgmt., triggering capital projects etc)
• Manging the energy spend for the site.
Minimum Requirements:
• The ideal candidate must have a primary degree in engineering or a science-related subject and 10+ years’ experience in the Chemical/Pharmaceutical business, in a similar role ideally, with proven experience in managing a range of operations.
• Proven experience in a leadership role within Technical Services or a related field.
• Strong understanding of SHE, GMP, and regulatory compliance requirements.
• Demonstrated expertise in managing complex systems and processes (e.g., thermal oxidiser, cryogenic abatement plant, wastewater systems, solvent management etc).
• Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Strong financial acumen with experience in budgeting and cost control.
• Ability to adapt to changing circumstances and drive continuous improvement initiatives
Preferred Skills:
• Familiarity with regulatory bodies such as FDA, HPRA, EPA, and HSA.
• Experience in a unionized and non-unionized environment.
• Proficiency in developing and implementing process improvements.
